Playa del Inglés

Back in the Sixties, there was an empty strip of coast going spare on Gran Canaria’s southern tip. So Playa del Inglés jumped in and grabbed it. They shipped in golden sand from the Sahara, rustled up some shiny, new shopping centres, threw in a stash of bars, restaurants and clubs – and got themselves the biggest, boldest resort on the island with probably the world’s best climate.

Playa del Inglés has also been associated with the gay traveler for over 25 years. Despite the fact that the Canaries is primarily Catholic, the locals have embraced the gay tourist very dearly. The main area for gay (and gay friendly) bars, clubs and accommodation is the Yumbo Centre and its surrounding area. There are at least 30 venues catering to gay mainstream and specific tastes including: leather, drag, cabaret, sport, cruising and men/women only.

There is also a gay beach, which is situated in the Maspalomas beach area.

Each year in the 2nd week of May one of the largest gay pride festivals in Europe is held in the Yumbo Centre and throughout the resort. The 2012 event was attended by over 190,000 people; with a larger and more professionally organized event year after year contributing to make Playa del Inglés the flagship gay resort center in Europe.
